Evelyn June Pidcock
February 19, 1914 – February 22, 2016
Evelyn Pidcock was the second child of Morris and Louise Pidcock, and she was born in a cabin on Carter Mountain February 19, 1914. At 3 ½ her family of four moved to a cabin near Red Dirt Creek where brothers Bill and John were born, Kremmling was 15 miles away.
In 1920 the Morris Pidcocks moved to Yampa. Marguerite (8 years), and Evelyn (7 years) were enrolled in first grade. The sisters went to grades 1-12 in Yampa. Evelyn attended Sunday School and Church at the Church of the Nazarene and at age 12 was converted and became a church member.
After graduating from high school, Evelyn and her family moved to a ranch property on Greenridge, 5 miles East of Yampa. The Pidcocks would travel to Yampa to go to church, and to pick up groceries and mail. Evelyn loved this Greenridge home, but was often gone when took live-in jobs as a household helper. Many were in the Yampa vicinity, one was in Steamboat, and one was in Kansas City, MO. She stayed longest with Isador Boltens - 12 years. She lived with them at the Hayden ranch in summer and moved with them to the Rawlins, WY ranch in the winter. After 11 years Mr. Bolten died, Mrs. Bolten sold the ranch properties and moved to Chicago. Evelyn stayed with her in Chicago for a year.
In 1956 Evelyn returned to Yampa to live in a house on a lot which she had previously purchased. She lived here for 49 years. Her closest relatives; mother Louise, sister Marguerite, and brother Bill also had homes in Yampa. Evelyn earned money from rooms at the Royal Hotel. She also cleaned the Yampa Ranger Station each week. She retired at age 64.
Evelyn was an active member of the Nazarene church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano. The Nazarene church was sold in 1974. She then adopted the Yampa Bible Church as her place of worship and service.
Evelyn enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and playing her musical instruments. She played the electric organ, piano, accordion, steel guitar, banjo, and auto harp.
Evelyn was known as a walker. She walked 4 miles daily with her dog. She often went on all day hikes with her sister to revisit old haunts on Greenridge. She loved to camp with her sister and sleep out under the stars. Her longest hike was 50 miles, when she walked from Yampa to Trapper’s Lake and back.
She wrote poetry to express her devotional thoughts and she recalled some excursions with friends in rhyme form.
When Evelyn turned 90, friends and family honored her with a celebration at the Yampa Town Hall. After turning 91 it became apparent Evelyn was having difficulty coping with living alone. She moved to Steamboat Springs to the Doak Walker Care Center. She adjusted to community living and activities there and felt “at home” in her room. She moved to the new location at Casey’s Pond. There she had a 100th birthday party with old friends and relatives as guests, who shared pictures and memories with her and each other. For the next two years she showed a decline in memory, judgment and increased risk of falls. On her 102nd birthday she had bouts of pain. She was x-rayed and found a broken femur. Her age made confinement to bed the only option. She was comforted by staff and relatives. Her last words were sung from “Love Lifted Me”. All who knew this wonderful Christian lady rejoiced that, with her last gasp she passed onto her final home in Heaven.
A funeral service was held at Yampa Bible Church on March 2, 2016. Interment followed at the Yampa Cemetery.
Evelyn Pidcock was preceded in death by parents: Morris Brown Pidcock (1946), and Louise Ritschard Pidcock (1969), by brothers: William Henry Pidcock (1971), and John Woodrow Pidcock (1994), by nephew, Thomas Pidcock, nieces : Annette (Pidcock) Frodine, Sadie (Nelson) Borroel, and by great niece: Connie Borroel.
Surviving relatives are: June Nelson, Mary (Nelson) Lovato, Alma Jean (Pidcock) Wisecup, Aldean (Pidcock) Ezmail, Billy Mae (Pidcock) Pritchett. Great nieces: Janet (Nelson) Rossi, Charlene (Nelson) Regan, and Leslie Borroel. Great, great nephews and niece: Matthew David Regan, Carl Guy Rossi, Mattie Renee Rossi.
