James (Jim) Kenneth Whiteman passed away on August 27th from heart complications. He was born in Steamboat Springs, in 1955 and always felt a connection to the mountains.
He was deeply blessed for having such a loving supporting family. He leaves his beloved mother, Reverend Marian Whiteman, a very important cousin in Diane (Missy) Jones, brother Cameron Whiteman, two sisters, Ann Whiteman Hope and Lissa Whiteman Claussen. Jim was blessed with three wonderful children, Riley Bevon Whiteman (Fiona Clifford), Cam Carlson Whiteman (Monica Schaeffer) and Emily Nicole Whiteman (Michael Huscher). He also was blessed with two grandchildren, Alton Rhys Whiteman and Ava Rayne Whiteman. Sean Claussen, Lowell Hope and Amy Claussen are beloved nephews and niece. He was preceded in death by his father Lowell Wheeler Whiteman, founder of the The Lowell Whiteman School.
Jim was most proud of his three children. Other accomplishments include his graduation from West Point in 1977. He was in the hospitality business for many years; including, co-owning and operating a successful motel. He later became a professional poker player, dealer, and finally, a poker room floorman. He also loved volunteering at the Sunny Sands School in Cathedral City, CA. Jim was a writer, author and publisher and found joy in writing poetry. His most recent collection of poems, “Creek Music”, released last month, has many referenced to his upbringing in Routt County.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Center for Spiritual Living, in Palm Desert, CA at noon on September the 8th. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Center would be deeply appreciated by the family.
