ALMA“JEAN”TOURNEY MAY
Alma “Jean” Tourney May, 84, passed away peaceably on July 30, 2015 in Morro Bay, CA. She was born in Grenada, Colorado the youngest of eight children born to George and Mary Tourney.
She attended and graduated from Mesa College in 1951 where she met and eventually married John “Jack” Wentworth May from Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1952. Jack was Alma’s loving husband for the next 58 years until his death in 2010.
Alma graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a BS in 1962 while Jack completed his PhD in 1968.
In 1956, Alma was named Colorado State Fair Queen in the sewing competition sponsored by the National Cotton Council and went on to win the National Cotton Bag Sewing Queen crown later that year.
Alma was extremely talented, she was both artistic and crafty; from fiber and folk art to furniture making, her bountiful work crossed many genres, and was recognized, exhibited and sold in many venues over her life.
Alma “Jean” will be lovingly remembered and missed by her family and friends as a humble, honest, hardworking woman and devoted friend, neighbor, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to many. Alma leaves behind her loving children; two sons, Sanford “Sam” May of Hammond, Oregon, and John May of St. Louis, Mo.; daughters, Mary E. May of Los Osos and Jennifer May Bosso of Santa Barbara; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and many friends throughout the world.
