Robert Samuel Dick
1949 - 2016
Former Steamboat Springs resident Rob Dick died Saturday at Denver Hospice after a tenmonth battle with cancer. He was born in New York on July 10, 1949, to Irving Dick and Gladys Kenneally. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Crawford of Denver, his daughter, Svea Crawford and her husband, Josh Lawhon, of Steamboat Springs, and his daughter, Lauren Crawford and husband, Caleb Grinter, and grandson, James Grinter, age 2, of Costa Rica. He is also survived by his sister and her two children and families in California. Rob was a real estate developer in Steamboat Springs who worked with locals Michael Roberts and Jon Peddie developing Tamarac Point and the Meadows and Terraces at Eagle Ridge. Because of his passion for affordable housing, Rob headed the Regional Affordable Living Foundation for a time which renovated the Hillside Village Apartments and created West End Village under his leadership. He went on to create two cohousing projects in Steamboat: Butcherknife and River Place. He served as one of the founding board members of Yampa Valley Bank and was on the boards of PerryMansfield (where his daughter, Svea, was a dancer), the Lowell Whiteman School, and the Lowell Whiteman Primary School, where he helped finance the building of a new school in cooperation with St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Rob was an elected member of the board of Colorado Mountain College. He was active with Rocky Mountain Freestyle acting as starter for many regional competitions, of which his daughter, Lauren, was a competitor. Prior to moving to Steamboat Springs Rob was an investment banker and real estate developer in Denver, San Francisco, and Minnesota. In later years, Rob purchased property in the Trout Creek area and created a ranch where he and Kathy lived. They moved to Denver in 2012 but still own property and have many dear friends in Steamboat. He was a mentor to many young people and created lasting friendships with people of all ages and backgrounds. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and advisor. The family will be holding a private memorial at a later date per Rob’s request.
